You know those annoying shortcuts Microsoft puts on the desktop for Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook? They are unusually difficult to change or delete without tweaking the registry. Here's a heavily commented sample .reg file to add Notepad to your desktop.
Use these desktop shortcuts like any other shortcuts - as links to the target. You'll notice a difference only when you attempt to delete them, rename them, etc. See the source for details.
